The School District of Osceola County in Florida is taking a proactive approach to student safety by partnering with Korean company Smart Radar System to develop a new technology aimed at reducing blind spot risks for school buses. The system, which still needs to be approved by the Department of Education, consists of radars installed on the outside, inside, and underside of the bus. If a pedestrian is too close to the bus, lights and alarms will sound to alert the driver. In addition, the system includes 17 radars inside the bus to help prevent accidents involving children left inside the vehicle.
The motivation behind this partnership stems from the recognition of the risks associated with school buses and pedestrians. With 73 incidents reported over a 10-year period involving pedestrians and school buses, half of which involved school children, safety measures have become a top priority for the district. By implementing this new technology, the district aims to mitigate risks and ensure the safety of students not only on the bus, but also around the bus.
The CEO of Smart Radar System, Paul Kim, emphasized the collaborative efforts between his team and the district to develop this radar-based safety solution. Kim expressed the company’s gratitude for the opportunity to contribute positively to the U.S. after the sacrifices made by Americans during the Korean War. The innovative approach to student safety showcased by Osceola County and Smart Radar System sets an example for other school districts looking to enhance student protection on school buses.
