South Dakota is witnessing a changing of the guard in girls’ high school athletics, as Jo Auch prepares to retire as the assistant executive director of the South Dakota High School Activities Association. After 16 years of serving as the administrator for girls’ athletics, Auch’s successor will be Kristina Sage, a former Freeman Public Schools athletic director with 35 years of experience.
Both Auch and Sage have backgrounds in sports, with Auch playing basketball and softball in college and Sage competing in basketball and track in high school. They have witnessed significant changes in girls’ athletics over the years, including an increase in opportunities and a shift in coaching demographics.
One of Auch’s key responsibilities has been the recruitment and retention of sports officials, with a focus on addressing issues of poor sportsmanship. Sage, known for treating officials with respect, emphasizes the importance of addressing inappropriate behavior in sports.
Despite the challenges, both Auch and Sage believe that participation in high school athletics offers numerous benefits for students, from learning teamwork and leadership skills to developing character. One of Auch’s career highlights was the implementation of softball as a sport for girls, which has seen significant growth in the state over the years.
As Auch prepares to step down and pass the torch to Sage, both women look to the future with hopes of continued growth and success in girls’ high school athletics in South Dakota. Sage’s dedication and Auch’s legacy stand as testaments to the importance of sports in education and personal development.
