Starmer launches Great British Energy plan and criticizes Tories for creating chaos – UK Politics Live | Politics

Keir Starmer, in a speech in Runcorn, Cheshire, accused the previous government of leaving behind a “rot of shortsightedness and self-service” for Labour to clean up, stating that his administration is finding more mess left by the Tories every day. He emphasized the importance of rebuilding the country and highlighted the role of nuclear power in the government’s energy strategy.

Additionally, he launched Great British Energy, a state-owned energy firm that aims to drive down bills and promote energy independence. Starmer affirmed his commitment to delivering on Labour’s manifesto promises, including reducing household energy bills and creating jobs.

The speech also addressed a recent incident involving a police officer kicking a man at Manchester airport, with Starmer expressing concern over the footage. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper is set to meet with Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham to discuss the incident.

In other news, Labour has delayed proposals to address strategic lawsuits against public participation (Slapps) brought by oligarchs to intimidate journalists, academics, and campaigners. A review is underway to outlaw abusive Slapps while ensuring access to justice for legitimate claims. Lastly, the new first minister of Wales is expected to be installed in two weeks following Eluned Morgan’s confirmation as Welsh Labour leader. Vaughan Gething remains first minister for now.
