Kara-Murza warns against Putin’s victory in Ukraine war, urges action | Russia-Ukraine conflict Update

Russian opposition politician Vladimir Kara-Murza has defended prisoner swaps as crucial to securing the release of political detainees in Russia. He also called for Western governments and exiled opposition to start preparing for Russia’s democratic transition after President Vladimir Putin leaves office. Kara-Murza, who was released in a historic East-West exchange, emphasized the need to establish a democratic government in Russia and avoid repeating past mistakes.
He stressed the importance of securing the release of more prisoners of conscience in Russia, estimated to be around 1,300 individuals. Kara-Murza highlighted the cases of Alexei Gorinov and Maria Ponomarenko, urging support for them and others in desperate situations.
While acknowledging concerns that prisoner swaps could incentivize Putin to take more captives, Kara-Murza argued that the focus should be on saving lives and supporting those still in prison. He described the August 1 exchange as a life-saving operation that rescued 16 individuals from Russia’s harsh prison conditions.
Kara-Murza also urged the West to develop a plan for a future democratic Russia, emphasizing the need for Western leaders to stand with the Russian people against Putin. As one of the leading voices of the Russian opposition, Kara-Murza’s calls for political change and human rights advocacy continue to resonate both in Russia and internationally.
