Cutting-edge AI technology provides enhanced mammogram screenings for comprehensive health analysis

A Texas-based mammography technology lab, Solis Mammography, is now offering artificial intelligence technology to detect breast arterial calcification during mammograms. This additional analysis aims to identify potential heart disease risk, as calcification in breast arteries is linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. The AI technology is being provided at offices such as Washington Radiology in the D.C. area and is FDA approved.

Dr. Brian Choi from George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences explained that the presence of breast arterial calcification may help predict women vulnerable to heart disease, specifically coronary artery disease. While the screening tool offers additional information beyond traditional risk factors like high blood pressure and smoking history, insurance coverage for this analysis is currently not available.

The out-of-pocket cost for the “Mammo+Heart Screening” at Washington Radiology is $119. Despite the lack of insurance coverage, Solis Mammography believes it is important to provide additional insights into potential heart health risks through mammogram screenings. According to Chief Medical Officer Chirag Parghi, this approach maximizes the benefits of mammography as a screening service. While the process to secure insurance coverage for the breast arterial calcification analysis may be slow, Parghi anticipates it will happen within the next five to ten years.
