Uncovering the Truth of North Dakota’s Most Infamous Spirit: The Gray Lady of Sims – InForum

Kari Dordal Christianson, a resident of Elk River, Minnesota, grew up hearing stories about her grandmother Bertha, who died young and was buried in a remote cemetery in western North Dakota. Bertha’s grave in the town of Sims was rarely visited by family but the story of the “Gray Lady of Sims” continued to live on. Bertha was a trained nurse who eventually settled in North Dakota with her family.

The legend of the Gray Lady attracted visitors to Sims, a town that was once bustling but had dwindled in population over the years. Bertha’s granddaughter, Kari, and grandson, Mark, visited Sims to learn more about their mysterious grandmother and the legacy she left behind. Sims, founded in 1883, was home to a Scandinavian Lutheran church where Bertha and her family resided for a few years until her death in 1917.

Despite the ghostly sightings and tales, Bertha was described as a warm-hearted and gentle spirit, known for acts of kindness even in the afterlife. The church and parsonage in Sims remain standing, serving the community and attracting tourists who are intrigued by the legend of the Gray Lady. Kari and Mark’s visit to Sims brought them closer to understanding Bertha and the love that surrounded her, even in death. While some may doubt ghost stories, for Bertha’s granddaughter, the presence of her grandmother in Sims brought comfort and a sense of connection to her family’s past.
