Doug Burgum Nominated as Interior Secretary
Mar-a-Lago, Florida – President-elect Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he has nominated North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum for the position of Secretary of the Interior. The announcement was made during a gala at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate. Burgum, a Republican, was on the shortlist for leading either the Interior or Energy departments.
Upon confirmation by the U.S. Senate, Burgum would be responsible for overseeing approximately 70,000 employees and managing over 500 million acres of public lands, which includes national parks, monuments, and vital natural resources. His appointment aligns with Trump’s strategy to enhance energy production through increased mining and drilling. Burgum is regarded as a more moderate choice for the Cabinet, having established North Dakota’s Department of Environmental Quality in 2017, and he has proposed ambitious plans for the state to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.
Burgum’s tenure would follow that of Deb Haaland, the first Native American Cabinet member, who served as the Interior Secretary under the Biden administration. The Republican Governors Association publicly praised Burgum, commending him as a strong leader with a proven track record of safeguarding natural heritage while simultaneously promoting the effective use of local natural resources.
As Secretary of the Interior, Burgum’s policies and management will be scrutinized against the backdrop of Trump’s energy ambitions and the need for balanced environmental stewardship. His appointment represents a significant shift in leadership at a crucial department responsible for America’s treasured lands and resources.
