North Dakota Legislature looking to hire approximately 80 temporary positions for upcoming session

Approximately 80 temporary jobs are available for North Dakota’s upcoming legislative session in January. These positions include sergeants-at-arms, legislative pages, and two categories of committee clerks. Pay for these roles ranges from $136 to $239 per day, but there are no health benefits included. Qualifications for these jobs vary, but being nonpartisan, having a professional appearance, and good customer service skills are key qualities.

State Senator Dick Dever emphasized the unique experience of working during the legislative session and the perspective it gives on the dedication and commitment of legislators. Sergeants-at-arms ensure decorum in legislative chambers, while pages assist lawmakers with various tasks on the chamber floor. Committee clerks, divided into technology and procedural roles, play important roles in making committee hearings and testimony accessible.

John Bjornson, director of the North Dakota Legislative Council, highlighted the increased need for technology staff due to the Legislature’s digital orientation. Prior experience working in these roles can also serve as an introduction to the legislative process and may even lead to a future role as a legislator. Training for legislative staff will be held in December, with the legislative session set to begin in January and last up to 80 days.

Those interested in these temporary positions can apply through the Legislative Council’s job portal. Overall, these opportunities offer a chance to gain valuable experience and insight into the legislative process in North Dakota.
