An infant has died and 10 adults have fallen ill in a four-state listeria outbreak linked to ready-to-eat meat products produced by Yu Shang Food, Inc. officials say. The outbreak has affected individuals in New York, New Jersey, Illinois, and California, with all of them identifying as having Asian heritage. The infant who died was a twin, along with their sibling who also passed away, but the second twin’s death could not be linked to listeria. Additionally, their pregnant mother was affected but recovered. The outbreak was discovered during a routine USDA inspection of the Yu Shang Food plant, leading to a recall of products including the Seasoned Chicken Quarter Leg. The CDC found a genetic link in the outbreak, suggesting the cases were connected to the same food source. The recalled products were produced before Oct. 28 and included a variety of meat products such as Braised Pork Belly In Brown Sauce and Braised Beef Shank sold at retailers like 99 Ranch Market. Exposure to listeria can be life-threatening for vulnerable populations, including older adults, those with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, and newborns. Symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, and diarrhea, with potentially fatal consequences for some individuals. Consumers are urged to discard any recalled products and thoroughly clean their refrigerators and freezers to prevent further spread of contamination.
