LMU Men’s Basketball Falls Short Against North Dakota, Prepares for Belmont Clash
LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount University (LMU) men’s basketball team faced a tough challenge on Friday night, suffering a narrow 77-73 defeat to North Dakota despite five players scoring in double figures. The Lions struggled with their shooting, finishing at 35 percent from the field and only 26 percent from three-point range.
Jevon Porter was a standout for LMU, providing early scoring with two crucial three-pointers and wrapping up the game with 12 points and nine rebounds before fouling out. As North Dakota maintained a lead throughout the first half, Caleb Stone-Carrawell showcased his talent by leading the Lions with 17 points upon his return to the starting lineup, including the final seven points of the half, bringing the score to a manageable 36-32 at halftime.
The Lions made a strong push in the second half, unleashing a 12-2 run spearheaded by Will Johnston, who scored all 15 of his points in the latter half. Yet, North Dakota responded with a decisive 10-point streak, allowing them to pull ahead by nine. Despite a valiant effort from Alex Merkviladze, who contributed 16 points and a late and-one, LMU could not recover in the final minutes as North Dakota capitalized on free throws and offensive rebounds.
Rick Issanza made his season debut, showcasing his potential with two blocks, contributing to the team’s season-high seven blocks. Moving forward, LMU will compete in the Cancun Challenge against Belmont on November 26, with hopes of bouncing back and redeeming their earlier performance.
