North Dakota First Lady Kjersti Armstrong recently participated in the UND CONNECT New Americans project, a initiative by the UND Communication Department that documents the stories of newly naturalized citizens in the state. Armstrong, originally from Oslo, Norway, shared her journey to naturalization and the emotional impact it had on her during her interview for the project. Associate Professor Joonghwa Lee, who leads the project, highlighted the importance of showcasing the diversity and contributions of new Americans in the community. The project, which aims to bridge the gap between current residents and new Americans, also features interviews with other naturalized citizens, including those at naturalization ceremonies in Fargo and at UND events. Student interns involved in the project, such as Lauren Huso and Kiera Musil, expressed how working on the project has been educational and inspirational, changing their perspectives on what it means to be an American. With the involvement of high-profile figures like Armstrong, the project hopes to encourage more new Americans to share their stories and become a part of North Dakota.
