Japanese airport undergoes complete Hello Kitty rebranding for World Expo 2025 | Lifestyle

Oita Airport, located in the southwestern Japanese prefecture of Oita, has recently been rebranded as Oita Hello Kitty Airport in an effort to attract fans and tourists to the region. The rebranding, which lasts until October 13, aims to capitalize on Japan’s love for the character and offer an alternative destination to the already congested ones in the country.

The airport is adorned with Hello Kitty-themed decorations, from the boarding bridge to the luggage conveyor belt, creating a cute and memorable experience for travelers. In addition to Hello Kitty, other Sanrio characters like My Melody, Little Twin Stars, and Pochacco are also featured at the airport.

Oita Prefecture, known for its natural hot springs and onsen towns, is looking to increase tourism from major metropolitan areas and showcase its unique attractions to a global audience. Sanrio, the company behind Hello Kitty, is selling exclusive merchandise at the airport’s domestic terminal to further enhance the experience for visitors.

The rebrand reflects a trend in Japan of naming airports after popular cultural icons, with other examples including Tottori Sand Dunes Conan Airport and Yonago Kitaro Airport. By leveraging the global popularity of characters like Hello Kitty, Oita hopes to become a bridge connecting countless smiles and welcoming visitors from around the world to its charming region.
