A gunman, identified as 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, opened fire at Florida State University, killing two people and injuring six others near the student union at 11:50 a.m. Police were able to engage and apprehend the suspect. Ikner, the son of a sheriff’s deputy, was believed to be a student at FSU and had access to weapons through his involvement in the sheriff’s office’s Youth Advisory Council. Witnesses described him as a “normal college dude.” The suspect was hospitalized with unspecified injuries. The gun used in the shooting belonged to Ikner’s mother, a former law enforcement officer, and he was also found to have a shotgun with him. The motive for the shooting remains unknown. One of Ikner’s former classmates recalled his expulsion from a political group for holding white supremacist views. The victims’ identities have not been released, and at least five are receiving treatment for gunshot wounds in hospitals. The incident has left the FSU community shocked and searching for answers as to why this tragedy occurred. Police are continuing to investigate the shooting and the events leading up to it.
