The Misleading Gluten-Free Menu Options at Applebee’s

Since 1980, Applebee’s has been a popular neighborhood grill known for its tempting menu items like riblets, boneless wings, and Dollaritas. Despite facing closures and financial troubles, Applebee’s has continued to entice customers with catchy commercials and menu updates. However, recent scrutiny reveals that Applebee’s “gluten-sensitive” labeling on some menu items may be misleading, as the chain cannot guarantee that their food is entirely free of allergens due to shared cooking areas.

For customers with gluten intolerances or celiac disease, consuming even small traces of gluten can lead to serious health issues. Despite labeling certain items like Classic Bone-In Wings and Double-Glazed Baby Back Ribs as “gluten-sensitive,” some social media users and former employees have reported reactions after consuming these items. Applebee’s menu items do not meet the FDA’s definition of “gluten-free,” which requires products to contain less than 20 milligrams of gluten, leading the chain to use the “gluten sensitive” label instead.

While Applebee’s may not be a safe option for gluten-free diners, Outback Steakhouse has been recommended as a truly gluten-free alternative. With shared cooking areas and common fryer oil, Applebee’s gluten-sensitive items may not be safe for those with serious gluten allergies. Customers should exercise caution and inquire about preparation methods before assuming a menu item is gluten-free at Applebee’s.
