With Only Three Weeks Left, ND Legislature Addresses Mandate Resolution And Interstate Speed Limits

North Dakota lawmakers are currently in the midst of their 80-day legislative session, set to conclude on May 9. Recent actions include the Senate voting down a resolution related to mandated reporting requirements for public officials. This resolution, prompted by the sex crime conviction of former Sen. Ray Holmberg, aimed to make public officials mandated reporters, requiring them to report abuse, neglect, and exploitation of vulnerable individuals. Despite passing unanimously in the House, the Senate rejected the resolution.

Additionally, the Senate narrowly passed a bill to increase the speed limit on interstates to 80 miles per hour. The bill also includes fines for speeding and increases in driver violations. This bill will now need approval from the House before reaching Governor Armstrong’s desk. It is worth noting that a similar bill was vetoed by former Governor Doug Burgum two years ago, citing the state’s Vision Zero initiative to reduce road injuries and fatalities.

As the session progresses, North Dakota legislators continue to debate and pass important measures that will impact the state’s residents. Stay tuned for further updates on the legislative session in Bismarck.
