Oil Recovery Amid Pipeline Spill in North Dakota
BISMARCK, ND — A significant cleanup effort is underway following an underground pipeline spill in North Dakota. The spill, which occurred on April 8, released an estimated 3,500 barrels (approximately 147,000 gallons) of crude oil onto farmland, as reported by South Bow, the line’s operator. As of April 10, workers have successfully recovered around 700 barrels (29,400 gallons) with over 200 crew members engaged in remediation and investigation efforts.
The spill, located near Fort Ransom, roughly 60 miles southwest of Fargo, is under investigation. South Bow has not yet provided a timeline for the resumption of operations along the Keystone Pipeline, which stretches 2,689 miles from Alberta, Canada, to refineries in Illinois, Oklahoma, and Texas. The company has assured that service will only resume upon receiving the necessary regulatory approvals.
While the pipeline remains temporarily shut down from Alberta to various Illinois locations, it continues to function between Oklahoma and Texas. The company is collaborating with the federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration and the state’s Department of Environmental Quality to monitor the situation closely. Fortunately, continuous air quality assessments signal no immediate health threats to the nearby residents, according to South Bow.
Local landowner Myron Hammer noted that the site remains bustling with activity as workers prepare the area for ongoing recovery efforts. While the spill site is not heavily populated, it is surrounded by a community of homes, including retirees and local workers.
As efforts to resolve the spill continue, South Bow emphasizes their commitment to safety and compliance with regulatory mandates.
