Governor Rhoden Proclaims May as Military Appreciation Month in South Dakota
KXLG – South Dakota
In a heartfelt initiative, Governor Larry Rhoden, alongside the South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs (SDDVA), has declared May as "Military Appreciation Month." This month is dedicated to honoring and remembering the sacrifices made by current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces, along with their families.
"Freedom isn’t free—it comes at a cost, paid daily by the brave men and women in uniform and their loved ones," Governor Rhoden remarked. He encourages all South Dakotans to reflect on this commitment and express their appreciation throughout the month.
Key observances in May include Loyalty Day on May 1, Victory in Europe Day on May 8, Military Spouse Appreciation Day on May 9, Armed Forces Day on May 17, and Memorial Day on May 26. Additionally, May is recognized as Gold Star Awareness Month, aimed at honoring the families of fallen service members.
SDDVA Secretary Jeremiah Schneider emphasized the significance of this month, calling it "more than a calendar of events—it’s a call to action." He urges South Dakotans to engage actively by reaching out to veterans, supporting military spouses, and honoring Gold Star families. Schneider stated, "We are a stronger, more unified state and nation when we recognize the sacrifices of our military community."
The SDDVA encourages citizens and organizations to participate in local ceremonies, display the American flag, and find meaningful ways to thank those who have served. This May, let us all take the opportunity to celebrate and appreciate the invaluable contributions of our military service members and their families.
