North Dakota Legislators Push for Mandatory Reporting of Crimes Against Children

BISMARCK, N.D. — In light of the shocking revelations in the Ray Holmberg case, North Dakota lawmakers are advocating for new legislation to make it mandatory for elected officials and higher education employees to report crimes against children.

At a recent press conference, State Sen. Tim Mathern of Fargo, alongside fellow legislators, unveiled a bill aimed at enhancing child protection in the wake of what has been described as the "most egregious scandal in our state’s history." Mathern underscored the importance of fully funding the state’s ethics commission, criticizing recent legislation that imposed a cut-off time for investigations by the commission.

“This would be a step forward towards justice as we continue to process Holmberg’s vile crimes,” Mathern stated. The push for mandatory reporting comes as awareness grows regarding the severity of child exploitation. Notably, a house resolution proposing a study on making elected officials mandatory reporters was recently voted down, sponsored by Rep. Nico Rios.

As the state grapples with its response to this scandal, legislators are determined to implement measures that could prevent future abuses and ensure greater accountability among officials.
