Fargo Legislator’s Bill on Mandated Reporting Blocked in Senate Committee
BISMARCK, N.D. (Flag Family Media) – A proposal by Senator Tim Mathern, a Fargo Democrat, to extend mandated reporter status to lawmakers and higher education employees has been halted in the Senate’s Delayed Bills committee. The committee voted 4-1 against allowing the bill to be heard due to time constraints in the legislative session, as it requires three days to pass through the necessary procedures.
Mathern, who had drafted multiple versions of the bill, reported that some committee members suggested his motivations were politically driven. However, he emphasized his commitment to addressing the issue after learning about allegations involving former State Senator Raymond Holmberg, stating, “I had a responsibility to act.”
Despite the committee’s decision, members encouraged Mathern to resubmit the bill in the next session, a suggestion he is willing to pursue. “I’m going to be following this in the interim, too,” he affirmed, indicating his dedication to ensuring that such measures are included in future legislative agendas. The proposed legislation aims to enhance accountability for individuals in positions of trust within the community.
