In a recent report, South Korean lawmakers stated that approximately 600 North Korean troops have died while fighting for Russia in Ukraine, out of a total of 15,000 deployed soldiers. The North has experienced around 4,700 casualties, including injuries and deaths, but intelligence reveals increased combat capabilities among its forces, notably through the use of modern weapons, such as drones.
In exchange for their military support, North Korea reportedly received technical assistance from Russia in areas like spy satellite technology, drones, and anti-aircraft missiles. Lee Seong-kweun, a member of South Korea’s parliamentary intelligence committee, noted that after six months in the conflict, North Korea’s military has shown significant improvement in combat effectiveness, adapting to new technologies.
For the first time, Pyongyang confirmed its troop deployment in Ukraine, asserting that it acted under the directives of leader Kim Jong Un. This engagement has reportedly enabled Russia to regain control of territories previously occupied by Ukrainian forces. The collaboration has strengthened ties between the historically isolated nations, with North Korea providing substantial artillery and missile supplies to Russia, benefiting their military operations in regions like Kursk.
Additionally, the remains of deceased North Korean soldiers are being cremated in Kursk before being returned home. Furthermore, it is estimated that around 15,000 North Korean workers have also been sent to Russia, contributing to the regime’s hard currency income, despite U.N. sanctions that prohibit their labor in foreign countries.
