North Dakota Teacher Salaries Drop in National Rankings
BISMARCK, N.D. (NDU) – North Dakota’s average public school teacher salaries have plummeted, landing the state at 40th in national rankings for the 2023-2024 school year, according to a report by the National Education Association. This marks a decline from 37th place last year and is a notable drop from 26th in the 2016-2017 academic year.
ND United President Nick Archuleta expressed concern over this trend, highlighting the impact on teacher recruitment and retention. “If North Dakota is serious about attracting qualified educators, we must increase salaries to reflect the essential work they do for students and communities,” he stated. There is growing urgency for legislative action to address salary concerns.
In October, the North Dakota Teacher Retention and Recruitment Task Force put forth seven recommendations, including optimizing educator earnings and maximizing benefits. Despite these calls for action, teachers’ average salaries saw a modest increase of only 3.24%—from $56,740 in 2022-2023 to $58,581 this year—insufficient to counter rising inflation and maintain educators’ purchasing power.
As the state grapples with these challenges, the future of North Dakota’s educational workforce remains uncertain.
