New Champion Trees Added to North Dakota Registry
BISMARCK – The North Dakota Register of Champion Trees has welcomed four new champions, including a notable Mugo pine from Minot, owned by Dean and Susan Thompson. The tree, standing tall at 22 feet with a circumference of 28 inches and an average crown spread of 27.67 feet, earned a total of 56.92 points. It was nominated by their son, Cullan, who fondly recalls climbing it in his youth.
State Forester Thomas Claeys announced these additions, emphasizing the importance of the champion tree contest in promoting forestry awareness and conservation efforts. The registry recognizes the largest trees of each species in North Dakota, based on a formula considering circumference, height, and crown spread.
Among other honorees, the Japanese tree lilac in Bismarck, owned by Terry Wolf, scored 100.5 points. The Kentucky coffeetree in Fargo, owned by Stephanie Ropard, earned 159.25 points, while the crowning Norway maple, owned by Kenneth Birst in Bismarck, boasts a remarkable 178.25 points. Visitors are encouraged to respect private land when viewing these champion trees. More information, including nomination guidelines, can be found on the N.D. Forest Service’s website.
