North Dakota Center for Aerospace Medicine Established at UND
The North Dakota Legislature has greenlit the creation of the North Dakota Center for Aerospace Medicine at the University of North Dakota (UND). Governor Kelly Armstrong signed House Bill 1612 on April 29, officially launching this collaborative initiative between the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences and the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences.
The new center aims to provide essential mental health support and assistance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification for aerospace students, pilots, and aviation professionals. Funded with a one-time allocation of up to $250,000, the center seeks to address the unique health challenges within the aviation and space fields.
Marjorie Jenkins, dean of the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences, emphasized the center’s role in setting a national standard for integrated research and education in aerospace medicine. Robert Kraus, dean of Aerospace, echoed these sentiments, highlighting that this initiative reinforces North Dakota’s leadership in the aerospace sector.
Key functions of the center include providing mental health resources, supporting FAA medical certification processes, and facilitating research collaboration across the state. The efforts promise to enhance safety and health in aviation, positioning North Dakota as a pioneer in this field.
