Watne Announces Departure as North Dakota Farmers Union President

JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Mark Watne, President of the North Dakota Farmers Union (NDFU), has announced he will not seek reelection for a 13th term during the organization’s annual meeting in December. Elected in November 2013, Watne has also held positions as President of Farmers Union Insurance and the Farmers Union Service Association.

In his statement, Watne emphasized the importance of cultivating new leadership for the future, underscoring, “Strong leaders must develop new leaders of future generations for the longevity of an organization to succeed.” He expressed confidence that it is time for a new generation to lead the agricultural community and support family farms and ranches.

With a remarkable 26 years of dedicated service to the NDFU, Watne previously held roles as a county president, state board member, and staff executive director. Reflecting on his tenure, he noted, “The state of our organization is strong and effective. I believe we have made a huge difference in the lives of family farmers and ranchers in this country.”

Watne’s leadership has been instrumental in advancing the mission of the NDFU, making significant strides in policies affecting rural communities. He expressed optimism about the organization’s future, stating, “I have no doubt we will be effective well into the future, thanks to the continued strength of our members.”

As Watne prepares to step down, the NDFU looks ahead to new opportunities and leadership that will carry forward its legacy of supporting North Dakota’s farmers and ranchers. The upcoming annual meeting is anticipated to be a vital platform for discussing the future direction of the organization.
