North Korea announced a significant advancement in its relations with Russia, as construction began on a new road bridge over the Tumen River. This project, which had been under discussion for years, gained momentum during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to North Korea in 2024. The state media, KCNA, described the bridge as vital for enhancing economic cooperation, promoting tourism, and facilitating the movement of goods and people between the two countries.
The construction ceremony was attended by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, who emphasized that the bridge symbolizes a shared commitment to strengthening friendly ties and increasing regional cooperation. This new structure will be nearly 2,800 feet long and will connect with the Russian highway system, providing entrepreneurs with better transportation opportunities and lower logistical costs. The bridge is expected to be completed by summer 2026.
Furthermore, reports indicate that North Korea is receiving economic and military support from Russia in exchange for sending arms to assist in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Discussions are underway regarding the modernization of 14 industrial sectors in North Korea, supported by Russian aid in areas such as metals, aviation, energy, and tourism. South Korean intelligence has also revealed that approximately 600 North Korean troops have lost their lives in combat while supporting Russia’s efforts in Ukraine, out of a total deployment of 15,000 troops.
The construction of the bridge and the broader military and economic collaboration highlight a deepening alliance between North Korea and Russia, signaling a significant shift in regional dynamics.
