North Dakota Residents Urged to Obtain REAL ID Before May 7, 2025 Deadline
The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) is reminding residents to update their driver’s licenses to REAL ID-compliant versions before the May 7, 2025 deadline. After this date, only REAL ID-compliant credentials will be accepted for domestic air travel and access to federal facilities. (dot.nd.gov)
What is REAL ID?
The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, sets standards for the issuance of identification documents to enhance security and reduce identity fraud. A REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or ID card is marked with a gold star in the upper right corner. (dot.nd.gov)
Required Documentation
To obtain a REAL ID-compliant license, residents must provide:
-
Proof of Identity: U.S. birth certificate, valid U.S. passport, certificate of naturalization, or valid Permanent Resident Card.
-
Proof of Social Security Number: Social Security card, W-2 form, SSA 1099 form, or pay stub containing the Social Security number.
- Proof of North Dakota Residency: Current utility bill, lease agreement, or property tax statement.
If your current name differs from the one on your identity document, additional proof of the legal name change is required. (dot.nd.gov)
Application Process
Residents can apply for a REAL ID at NDDOT driver license sites across the state. Full-time locations include Bismarck, Minot, Fargo, Williston, Dickinson, Grand Forks, Devils Lake, and Jamestown. Part-time sites are available in Beulah, Bottineau, Bowman, Grafton, Harvey, Linton, Oakes, Rolla, Valley City, Wahpeton, and Watford City. (dot.nd.gov)
Avoid Last-Minute Rush
With the deadline approaching, NDDOT encourages residents to apply early to avoid long wait times. As of September 2024, 62% of North Dakotans have obtained their REAL ID, slightly above the national average of 58%. (kfyrtv.com)
