The University of North Dakota’s women’s basketball program has announced the addition of Claire Canahuate as an assistant coach. Head coach Mallory Bernhard expressed enthusiasm about the new hire, stating, "We are thrilled to welcome Claire to our Fighting Hawks family. Her experience and passion for the game will be invaluable to our program."
Canahuate brings a wealth of experience to the team. She previously served as the head assistant women’s basketball coach at Mayville State University, where she played a pivotal role in leading the Comets to consecutive North Star Athletic Association Regular Season Championships from 2018 to 2020. Under her guidance, the team achieved a 22-6 conference record over those two seasons and secured the NSAA’s postseason tournament championship in 2019-2020, advancing to the NAIA National Tournament. As a player at Mayville State, Canahuate earned four NSAA All-Conference honors, including two first-team selections in her junior and senior years. She was also named an Honorable Mention All-American in back-to-back seasons, averaging over 19 points per game in each. In 2017, she received NAIA DAKTRONICS Academic All-American honors. Canahuate concluded her playing career with 1,757 points, ranking her second in program history, along with 736 rebounds, 137 steals, 76 blocks, and 164 assists. (fightinghawks.com)
Following her coaching tenure at Mayville State, Canahuate expanded her expertise in compliance roles at the University of St. Thomas and Bemidji State University. Canahuate holds a bachelor’s degree in sport management with minors in fitness/wellness and coaching from Mayville State. She earned a Master of Legal Studies from Pepperdine University School of Law and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of St. Thomas School of Law. (fightinghawks.com)
