Singapore’s Long-Established Party Secures Major Victory, Boosting New Prime Minister

Singapore’s ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) secured a decisive victory in the recent general elections, winning 82 of the 97 parliamentary seats, with an additional five seats uncontested, bringing their total to 87. This extends the PAP’s dominance, having ruled since 1959. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who took office a year ago, celebrated the win, which saw the party’s popular vote increase to 65.6%, up from 61% in the previous election.

Despite the Workers’ Party (WP) holding onto its 10 seats, analysts noted their inability to make further gains came as a surprise. Eugene Tan, a law professor, suggested that voters demonstrated their trust in the PAP, which boasts a history of delivering stability and growth. Wong, a finance minister and U.S.-trained economist, appealed for support to navigate economic challenges amidst global uncertainty, particularly issues related to U.S. tariffs.

As Wong steps into a leadership role following Lee Hsien Loong’s two-decade tenure, concerns persist about rising living costs, income disparity, overcrowding, and limited free speech in Singapore. Critics argue that the PAP’s continued dominance may be reinforced by gerrymandering and resource imbalances that challenge opposition parties.

Pritam Singh, the WP leader, acknowledged the tough electoral landscape but emphasized the party’s commitment to advocating for a balanced parliament. Political analyst Bridget Welsh remarked that Wong’s approachable leadership and renewed party image contributed to voter support, particularly among younger demographics. The election results were viewed as both a mandate for stability amid global volatility and an invitation to address rising public concerns regarding governance and economic pressures.
