Spirit Lake Nation Prepares for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Awareness Day
As Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Relatives Awareness Day approaches on May 5, the Spirit Lake Tribe, alongside other tribal nations in North Dakota, is intensifying efforts to address the alarming rates of Indigenous people reported missing and murdered. With 14 individuals currently listed as missing in North Dakota, including 20-year-old Renzo Bull Head, who has been missing for over a month, the need for action is pressing. Volunteers from various communities have united to aid in ongoing searches.
The Spirit Lake Tribe has pledged a $20,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of two residents, Isaac James Hunt and Jemini Posey, both missing for more than a year. Chairwoman Lonna Jackson-Street emphasized community support, stating, "These are our people, and we stand with their families in search efforts."
Additionally, advocacy efforts are advancing in the North Dakota Legislature, with the passage of bills aiming to establish a task force for missing Indigenous peoples and a “Feather Alert” system for swift notifications about missing cases. Jackson-Street highlighted the importance of proactive measures to ensure these cases receive immediate attention. A 5K walk/run event is also planned in Fort Totten to honor this crucial initiative.
