Howard Wood Dakota Relays Celebrates 100th Anniversary with Thrilling Performances

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KFYR) – The Howard Wood Dakota Relays marked its centennial celebration, showcasing impressive talent from Western North Dakota on the first day of the event. Highlighted races included the girls’ 200 meters and boys’ 800 meters, featuring hand-selected athletes based on nominations from coaches.

Velva’s Anya Olson made headlines by winning the girls’ 200 meters in a record-tying time of 23.94 seconds, matching the all-time North Dakota high school record previously held by Kelsie Belquist. “It’s an honor to be here,” Olson remarked, praising the competitive atmosphere and the diligence of her offseason training. She also set a new Howard Wood Relays record with a 100-meter dash semifinal time of 11.67 seconds.

In the boys’ 800 meters, Bowman County’s Taylor Wanner finished first with a time of 1:52.64, solidifying his place as the fifth fastest in North Dakota high school history and breaking the Bulldogs’ school record.

The St. Mary’s boys’ 4×200 meter relay team also excelled, winning their event with a time of 1:30.47. In field events, Bismarck’s Jordyn Rood and Dickinson’s Blake Homiston claimed victories in the high jump and pole vault, respectively.
