Red Flag Warning Issued for Eastern North Dakota and Northwest Minnesota

GRAND FORKS – A red flag warning will be in effect on Monday, May 5, for much of eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota due to critical fire weather conditions. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued the warning, which will take effect at 11 a.m. and last until 7 p.m.

The NWS cautions that a combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures could lead to extreme fire behavior. Winds are expected to blow from the south at 20 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching up to 35 mph, while relative humidity levels will hover around 20%. This creates a high-risk environment for any ignited fires, allowing them to spread rapidly and become challenging to control.

Counties affected in Minnesota include Polk, Clay, Kittson, and others, while in North Dakota, counties such as Cavalier, Pembina, and Grand Forks are included. High temperatures in the area are projected to reach the low to mid-80s on Monday, with cooler conditions expected on Tuesday. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged during this period to mitigate fire risks.
