Two Sites in the Aberdeen Area Chosen as Potential Locations for New Men’s State Prison

Sioux Falls Poised for New Men’s Prison as Task Force Reviews Proposals

Sioux Falls, SD—In a significant development for South Dakota’s corrections system, Gov. Larry Rhoden’s Project Prison Reset Task Force will evaluate 13 potential sites for a new men’s prison during a meeting on April 29 in Springfield. Notably, over half of these sites are located in the Sioux Falls area, with additional proposals from Aberdeen, Huron, and Grant County.

This initiative comes as a response to the South Dakota Department of Corrections’ long-standing need for improved incarceration and rehabilitation solutions, especially following the halt of a previously proposed $825 million prison plan located near Sioux Falls. The task force, consisting of 22 members and established in February, seeks to explore alternatives that align with the state’s correctional needs.

Among the prominent proposals is the former Citibank campus in northeast Sioux Falls, which has been assessed by task force members. While the task force has indicated a preference for sites within 20 miles of Sioux Falls, it remains open to submissions from other regions, provided they meet criteria such as they being at least 100 acres in size.

The suggested sites range from 69 to 160 acres, with various accessibilities to utilities including sewer and water. Some of the notable locations include properties in Aberdeen and Huron, both boasting developable utilities.

In addition to the existing proposals, two late additions were announced on April 28—a 218-acre site in Canton and a 97-acre site in Wayne Township, further diversifying the options for consideration.

As the task force proceeds with its evaluation, the future of South Dakota’s prison infrastructure hangs in the balance, with the potential for transformative changes in the state’s approach to corrections.
