Veterans Honor Flight Takes Off for D.C.
Washington, D.C. — The Veterans Honor Flight of North Dakota and Minnesota departed from Fargo on Sunday, embarking on a heartfelt three-day journey to Washington, D.C. to visit memorials honoring their service.
The first day included visits to the World War II Memorial and the National Museum of the U.S. Army, prompting emotional reflections among veterans. Veteran Jim Gnadt, who traveled with his grandson, expressed gratitude for the trip, emphasizing the significance of shared experiences.
Another touching story emerged from Jerry and Sherry Kempel, who met during their service in the Army and have been married for 53 years. The Honor Flight aims to acknowledge the veterans’ sacrifices and ensure they feel appreciated, especially in light of the less-than-warm receptions many Vietnam veterans faced when returning home.
As veterans like Gary and Joe Speidel recounted their harrowing experiences, they found solace in camaraderie and shared memories during the tour.
The group is set to visit iconic sites such as the Vietnam Wall and Arlington National Cemetery, with a community welcome planned upon their return Tuesday at the FARGODOME. This journey offers veterans a unique opportunity to reflect on their legacies in the nation’s capital.
