Press Release: Fires Continue to Rage in Turtle Mountains and Fort Berthold Reservation
BELCOURT/NEW TOWN, N.D. (KMOT/KFYR) – Fire crews are actively battling at least 15 fires in the Turtle Mountains as of Sunday afternoon. High winds have complicated efforts, prompting Turtle Mountain Tribal Chairman Jamie Azure to announce the preparation of an emergency declaration. The tribe is coordinating with state and federal agencies for additional resources.
Residents in affected areas are being evacuated case by case, with emergency shelters established at the Belcourt Fire Department, SkyDancer Casino, and Dixon Event Center. Local authorities advise against public access to fire areas for safety reasons.
Meanwhile, a separate fire on the Fort Berthold Reservation, near New Town, broke out around 2:15 p.m. Sunday. Though initially contained, it jumped containment lines, damaging electrical poles and resulting in temporary power outages affecting approximately 60 structures. Over ten agencies have mobilized to combat the blaze.
Local fire officials have expressed gratitude to businesses and individuals for providing food and support to the emergency crews. Community members are urged to report any fire sightings by calling 911. The situation remains ongoing as crews continue their crucial work to manage the fires.
