North Dakota Officially Adopts 80 MPH Speed Limit
By Jeff Beach, North Dakota Monitor
North Dakota Governor Kelly Armstrong has officially enacted a new law raising the interstate speed limit to 80 mph, effective August 1. This decision positions North Dakota alongside South Dakota and Montana, while Minnesota maintains a lower limit of 70 mph.
Armstrong emphasized that the legislation strikes a "reasonable balance," aligning the state with its neighboring states while also introducing increased fines for speeding violations as a deterrent.
The bill comes after previous attempts to raise the speed limit were thwarted when former Governor Doug Burgum vetoed a similar measure in 2023.
With the new speed limit, the state aims to improve traffic efficiency while promoting road safety through enhanced penalties for those who exceed the limit. Governor Armstrong expressed confidence that the adjustments will benefit both residents and travelers in North Dakota as they utilize the state’s interstate highways.
