Poll Reveals Mixed Support for Trump’s Second Term Among South Dakota Republicans
SIOUX FALLS, SD – A recent poll indicates that nearly three-quarters of South Dakota’s Republican voters approve of former President Donald Trump’s leadership during the first 100 days of his second term, though some of his policies face criticism. Conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling, in conjunction with South Dakota News Watch and the Chiesman Center for Democracy at the University of South Dakota, the survey reveals that 73% of registered GOP voters approve of Trump, while 25% express discontent.
In terms of popularity, 68% of Republicans in South Dakota hold a favorable view of Trump, surpassing any other local political figure. Support for his policies, however, is more varied. For instance, while 70% of Republican voters endorse the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiatives aimed at cutting federal spending, overall approval dips to 49%, with significant disapproval coming from Independents (45%) and Democrats (93%).
Trump’s tariff policies, a hallmark of his administration, also reveal a split in opinion. While 50% of South Dakota voters support these measures, a significant portion—47%—disapproves, with notable concern from those in the agriculture sector about trade tensions with major partners like China and Canada.
The poll, conducted from April 9-11, included responses from a diverse range of voters and found that Trump’s strongest support comes from rural areas, despite lower approval ratings in the state’s metropolitan regions, like Sioux Falls (64%) and Rapid City (62%).
As Trump continues to pursue aggressive political agendas, the survey highlights a complex sentiment among South Dakota Republicans, balancing strong support for his leadership with apprehensions about specific policies affecting the state’s economy.
