Willow Lake Natives Transition Leadership at SDSU Students’ Association
Willow Lake, SD – April 7, 2024
South Dakota State University’s Students’ Association (SA) recently witnessed a significant leadership transition as Trinity Peterson concluded her two terms as president. The swearing-in ceremony marked the end of Peterson’s impactful tenure, supported by her sister, Grace Peterson, and high school classmate, Oscar Garcia. Their family’s deep involvement in the SA grew even further when their youngest sister, Emma Peterson, joined as a Senator-at-Large.
Trinity began her journey in the SA during her sophomore year, initially running for Vice President. After overcoming an election challenge and her running mate’s resignation, she took the helm as President. Throughout her two years in office, Peterson became a prominent advocate for the student body, engaging in critical discussions with the Board of Regents and successfully pushing for state tuition freezes. Under her leadership, significant GAF (General Activity Fee) funds were allocated to various campus initiatives.
Reflecting on her experience, Peterson expressed how the role has profoundly influenced her life, as she prepares to graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and Agricultural Leadership. She plans to continue her academic journey at Creighton University, pursuing a law degree.
Oscar Garcia, also a senior, has made considerable contributions to the SDSU community, serving as the SA Diversity Chair and earning the title of Senator of the Year for 2024-2025. He will soon begin his career in Sioux Falls.
Grace Peterson, a junior and Finance Chair of the SA Executive Committee, is set to start her own Farm Bureau Insurance Agency this summer. Meanwhile, Emma Peterson is enthusiastic about her new role as Chief of Staff for the incoming administration, where she aims to build on her family’s legacy within the student government. Emma is pursuing a double major in Ag Business and Entrepreneurial Studies, eager to collaborate with her peers in the SA.
