Fargo Police Urge Pet Owners to Adhere to Leash Laws

As warmer weather approaches, Fargo police are reminding pet owners of the city’s leash laws, which mandate that all dogs be leashed in public spaces with a leash no longer than 6 feet. Additionally, owners are required to carry supplies for waste clean-up.

While dogs do not need to be leashed on their owner’s private property or inside vehicles, violations of the leash law can result in fines starting at $50. Repeat offenders may face penalties up to $1,000, and could risk losing custody of their pets. Community Service Officer Erik Harmon emphasizes that leash laws are crucial for public safety. “We often hear, ‘Well, my dog’s friendly,’ but once unleashed, they can run into dangerous situations, such as traffic or encounters with other dogs,” Harmon explains.

For pet owners seeking more freedom for their dogs, Fargo offers four designated off-leash parks: Brandt Crossing, Dike East, Village West, and Yunker Farm. By adhering to these regulations, owners can help ensure a safe environment for all community members.
