Bismarck Certifies Election Results, Recounts Loom

On November 20, the North Dakota State Canvassing Board officially certified the results of the 2024 general election. Following the certification, two seats in the state House of Representatives are set to undergo a recount, with Republican David Brien from District 9 and Democrat Mary Adams from District 18 meeting the threshold to request a review of their results. Candidates have four days to initiate these recount requests.

In addition to the House races, automatic recounts are mandated for two Soil Conservation District supervisor positions—one for an unexpired two-year term in the South McLean district and another in Towner County.

Voter participation was notable, with 371,975 eligible residents casting ballots, resulting in a statewide turnout rate of 62.61%. A remarkable response was seen for absentee and vote-by-mail ballots, with over 95,000 requests received and a return rate of 95.46%. Early voting also showed strong engagement, with nearly 99,000 participants.

The State Canvassing Board is scheduled to reconvene at 10 a.m. on December 2 to address the results from the automatic recounts and any potential requested recounts.

The certification rounds out a significant electoral event for North Dakota, highlighting both competitive races and strong voter engagement across various modalities, including mail-in and early voting. As recounts approach, the Board’s gathering next month will be crucial in finalizing these close contests.
