Another State Becomes Part of the 80 MPH Speed Limit Club

North Dakota Raises Speed Limit to 80 mph on Multi-Lane Highways

North Dakota has officially joined the ranks of states with higher speed limits as its legislature recently passed a bill allowing 80 mph speeds on select multi-lane highways. Signed into law by Governor Kelly Armstrong on May 5, this change marks a shift from the previous maximum limit of 75 mph. The decision reflects a growing trend among neighboring states, particularly South Dakota, which raised its speed limit to 80 mph in 2015 without a corresponding increase in accidents or fatalities.

The new law, which goes into effect on August 1, was passed with a clear majority, although it required a second vote following an initial rejection. Controversies surrounding the bill included concerns about potential increases in crash rates. However, data suggested that the adjustment simply aligns the legal limits with the speeds most drivers were already traveling.

The 80 mph speed limit will primarily apply to major highways like Interstate 94 and Interstate 29, while provisions for speed variations based on driving conditions will remain in effect, particularly around urban areas. This change is set to enhance travel efficiency across the state’s expansive roadways.
