Omaha Triumphs Over North Dakota in Summit League Softball Championship
BROOKINGS, S.D. – In an exciting showdown at Jerald T. Moriarty Softball Field, top-seeded Omaha secured a 4-2 victory against No. 4 North Dakota in Game 3 of the Summit League Softball Championship on Thursday.
Omaha set the tone early with a two-run double from Sydney Thomason in the first inning, giving them a 2-0 lead. North Dakota fought back in the second as Taya Hopfauf hit a solo home run, making it 2-1. However, the Mavericks extended their lead in the third with another double from Thomason, followed by Katherine Johnson’s solo home run in the fifth, bringing the score to 4-1.
Despite a late rally from North Dakota, which included a double from Callie Honig to bring the score to 4-2, Omaha’s pitcher Maddia Groff held strong, securing her 24th win of the season with eight strikeouts.
With this victory, Omaha advances to the winner’s bracket and will face the winner of the matchup between No. 2 South Dakota State and No. 3 South Dakota on Friday at 1 p.m. CT. North Dakota will play an elimination game against the loser of that matchup later in the day.
