North Dakota Job Service Aims to Connect Immigrants with Employment Opportunities
BISMARCK, N.D. — The North Dakota Job Service is helping immigrants navigate the job market through initiatives like the New American Job Fair, aimed at connecting them with local employment opportunities. Among the attendees is Litza Melrose from Panama, who credits her Career Readiness and English classes for improving her job search prospects.
With businesses nationwide struggling to fill vacancies post-COVID-19, many are actively seeking new Americans to join their teams. "We are looking for great new team members who want to be part of our community," said Raquel Nachatilo, Human Resources director at the Bismarck YMCA, emphasizing the diverse job openings available.
To facilitate these connections, the Job Service has appointed Leoncya Ngoma as the Refugee Career Navigator, working closely with the North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services. Ngoma’s role focuses on helping new arrivals integrate professionally and personally into the community.
Recognizing the importance of effective communication, translators are provided at job fairs to support interactions between employers and potential hires. A recent study revealed a significant need for Swahili interpreters, highlighting North Dakota’s linguistic diversity among its immigrant population.
