Jackrabbits Dominate Fighting Hawks in Summit League Doubleheader

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – In a commanding display, South Dakota State University (SDSU) secured consecutive wins over North Dakota in their Summit League softball doubleheader on May 2 at Albrecht Field, enhancing their playoff positioning.

In Game One, SDSU launched an explosive start, scoring eight runs in the first inning alone. Key contributions came from Brooke Dumont, who delivered an RBI double, along with Abby Gentry and Alli Boyle, who each added singles. The Jackrabbits extended their lead to 13-4 by scoring five additional runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by Emma Christensen’s first career home run. Gentry thrived at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Madi Mangulis made a significant impact in relief, earning three shutout innings while registering four strikeouts.

Game Two saw Tayler Baker take the pitcher’s mound, delivering one of her best performances to date. After initially falling behind 1-0, the Jackrabbits responded in the fourth inning, with Gentry’s single setting up Christensen’s RBI double to equalize. Baker dominated the mound with eight strikeouts, allowing only two hits throughout the game. SDSU sealed the deal with a strong fifth inning, thanks to a double by Caitlyn Wells and an RBI double by Akayla Barnard, culminating in a 3-1 victory.

With these wins, the Jackrabbits improved to 27-24 overall and secured the No. 2 seed for the upcoming Summit League Softball Championship. Gentry is now leading the conference in batting average and RBIs. Meanwhile, both Jarecki and Dumont reached significant career milestones in RBIs, with Jarecki setting a new program record for runs scored.

The teams will meet again for their regular season finale on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Albrecht Field.
