Emergency Fire Ban Enacted in Grand Forks County Amid High Fire Risks
GRAND FORKS — The Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Office has implemented a 72-hour emergency fire ban due to hazardous fire conditions, starting Monday afternoon. Violators could face penalties including up to 30 days in jail and a $1,500 fine, alongside fire suppression costs. This action comes as multiple counties across North Dakota have also enacted burn restrictions.
The Sheriff’s Office noted that several fires in the area have escalated, with 20 alone reported over the weekend, resulting in 1,100 acres burned in addition to the ongoing Turtle Mountain wildfires. This fire complex has grown to 3,600 acres and is expected to continue for an extended duration. Additionally, significant fires have been reported in Morton and Sheridan counties, alongside ongoing issues in St. Louis County.
The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning, signaling critical fire conditions due to extreme heat, strong winds, and low humidity. Meteorologists predict a shift in weather midweek, bringing potential rain that could help alleviate fire risks, although it is unlikely to end the drought conditions. Residents are urged to exercise caution with outdoor activities to prevent fire outbreaks.
