State Legislative Session Allocates Funding for Lake Metigoshe and International Peace Garden Enhancements
BISMARCK – In a recent legislative session, significant state funding was approved for critical sewer and water projects impacting Lake Metigoshe State Park and the International Peace Garden. The state will contribute $800,000 towards a $4 million upgrade of the Lake Metigoshe Sewer District, addressing mounting demand that has forced the district to haul sewage due to inadequate pump stations during peak seasons.
Senator Paul Thomas, R-Velva, who lobbied for the funding, emphasized the importance of equitable contributions from state properties utilizing the system. “It would have been unfair for the state not to participate,” he declared. The state’s investment represents 20% of the total project cost.
Additionally, $250,000 was allocated for a master development plan at the Peace Garden, in partnership with Manitoba, aimed at connecting to the Turtle Mountain Water System. The plan involves modernizing sewer and irrigation systems. Furthermore, $1.4 million will support necessary upgrades to music camp facilities, ensuring their long-term sustainability.
Tim Chapman, Chief Executive Director at the Peace Garden, expressed gratitude for the support, noting the facilities’ age and the importance of these improvements for future generations.
