BMW Advances Electric Vehicle Technology with All-Solid-State Battery Integration

The BMW Group is making significant strides in electric vehicle technology by incorporating large-format all-solid-state battery (ASSB) cells from Solid Power into its i7 test vehicle in Munich. This innovative partnership, which began intensifying in 2022, aims to optimize the performance of electric vehicles (EVs) by exploiting the higher energy density of ASSB technology compared to conventional batteries.

The integration of ASSB technology is expected to enhance vehicle range while alleviating the weight issues associated with traditional battery systems. The concept battery of the BMW i7 is designed with Gen5 construction principles, using prismatic cells in innovative modules that seamlessly accommodate Solid Power’s ASSB.

BMW’s initiative not only aims to improve vehicle efficiency but also explores critical aspects such as cell expansion, operating pressure control, and temperature management. John Van Scoter, president and CEO of Solid Power, expressed pride in the collaboration, noting the significant milestone of demonstrating ASSB cells in a vehicle.

Martin Schuster, BMW’s vice president of Battery Cell and Module, highlighted the i7 test vehicle as a testament to BMW’s "technology-open mindset" while advancing battery technology in partnership with industry leaders like Solid Power. The long-standing collaboration, dating back to 2016, has recently deepened with BMW operating a solid cell prototype line at its Cell Manufacturing Competence Centre in Parsdorf.

This initiative marks a crucial step in BMW’s ongoing commitment to battery innovation, which has been cultivated since 2008 at the Battery Cell Competence Centre in Munich. With the support of Solid Power’s advanced sulphide electrolyte technology, BMW is poised to offer valuable insights and propel the future of electric vehicles.
