Minot Hosts Successful Civics Bee with Local Students Excelling

Minot, ND – Three middle school students showcased their civic knowledge during North Dakota’s only local National Civics Bee competition held on April 11 at Minot State University. Sponsored by the Minot Area Chamber EDC, the event featured 20 participants from across western North Dakota.

Clara Zheng from Erik Ramstad Middle School in Minot earned first place, followed by Ayden Heilman from Central Middle School in second, and MacKayla Crosland from Williston Middle School Central Campus in third. The top three winners will advance to the state competition in Bismarck, scheduled for July 11, where they will compete for a chance to represent North Dakota at the national championship in Washington D.C., where a $100,000 529 Plan scholarship awaits the victor.

Mark Lyman of the Minot Area Chamber EDC posed civic questions during the competition, which included live rounds of questioning and a civic essay component where students submitted essays on improving their communities. A panel of judges, including MACEDC President/CEO Brekka Kramer, selected the top 20 participants based on their essays.

The National Civics Bee aims to inspire students to engage meaningfully in civic life, fostering a sense of responsibility and community involvement. Jason Olson, a MACEDC board member, expressed excitement about seeing youth actively exploring solutions for community issues. Ryan Ackerman, MACEDC Board Chair, highlighted the importance of nurturing civic engagement among young people in the Minot area.

With positive community support, the Minot Area Chamber EDC has expressed hopes for the continued growth of this impactful initiative, reinforcing the importance of civic education as a cornerstone of a vibrant democracy.
