SDSU Dominates Summit League with Commissioner’s Cup Victory
Sioux Falls, S.D. – South Dakota State University (SDSU) has clinched the Summit League Commissioner’s Cup for the fifth consecutive year and a record-breaking tenth time overall, solidifying its position as a powerhouse in collegiate athletics. Announced on Monday, SDSU amassed a total of 94 points across its men’s and women’s programs, demonstrating exceptional performance across various sports.
In addition to the Commissioner’s Cup, SDSU swept both the Dr. Helen Smiley Women’s All-Sports Award and the Dr. William Steinbrecher Men’s All-Sports Award, achievements that underscore the depth of talent within its athletic programs. The points are awarded based on institutional standings in numerous sports, including soccer, basketball, track and field, and more.
Athletics Director Justin Sell highlighted the university’s triumphs, including regular season titles in women’s basketball and volleyball, along with a championship in women’s cross country. The SDSU men achieved a historic feat, winning championships in cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field within the same season, a first since the 2006-07 season.
Notable contributions to SDSU’s overall points came from its women’s golf team, which finished as the runner-up at the Summit League Championship, along with competitive finishes from women’s soccer, softball, men’s basketball, and men’s swimming and diving.
North Dakota State University took second place in the overall standings with 87 points, followed by the University of South Dakota with 78 points. The awards were presented by Summit League Commissioner Josh Fenton at the annual Joint Council meetings in Omaha, prior to the upcoming Summit League Baseball Championship.
