Burglars Dynamite Englevale Bank, Escape with $3,600

Englevale, ND – In a daring early morning heist on October 9, 1909, burglars dynamited the safe of the First State Bank of Englevale, making off with $3,600 in cash. The quiet town, situated thirteen miles southwest of Lisbon, was rocked by the explosion, which occurred at around 1:10 a.m. However, residents did not investigate the noise, believing it to be benign.

The thieves gained entry by forcing the front door before using dynamite to breach the safe, causing extensive damage that left little evidence for investigators. The robbery remained undetected until 5 a.m., when bank cashier William Norum discovered the wreckage. Suspicion initially fell on three strangers seen in Englevale the previous night, but officials cleared two of them when they were found in Verona.

Despite finding tracks of ponies leading into and out of the village, the authorities have yet to contact the perpetrators. Fortunately, the bank’s cash loss and property damage are covered by insurance. Efforts are underway among local law enforcement and the North Dakota State Bankers’ Association to apprehend the criminals.
