South Dakota State Claims Historic Fifth Straight Summit League Commissioner’s Cup
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – In a remarkable achievement, South Dakota State University (SDSU) has secured its fifth consecutive Summit League Commissioner’s Cup and set a new league record with its 10th overall title, the conference announced on Monday. The Jackrabbits amassed a total of 94 points across both men’s and women’s athletic programs, clinching the top position by dominating various sports in the league.
SDSU also swept the prestigious Dr. Helen Smiley Women’s All-Sports Award and the Dr. William Steinbrecher Men’s All-Sports Award. The Commissioner’s Cup recognizes the institution with the most points based on regular-season and championship performance in a multitude of sports, including soccer, volleyball, basketball, and track and field.
Under the leadership of Athletics Director Justin Sell, SDSU not only captured regular season titles in women’s basketball and volleyball but also secured a championship in women’s cross country. The men’s team made headlines as well, being the first program since 2006-07 to win cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track championships in the same season. Their men’s cross country team extended a record streak, achieving nine consecutive titles.
Contributions to the Jackrabbits’ winning total came from other sports, with the women’s golf team finishing runner-up at the Summit League Championship and several teams, including women’s soccer and softball, finishing strong in their standings.
Finishing behind SDSU, North Dakota State took second place in all awards with 87 points, while South Dakota earned third place with 78 points. This year marked a historic moment for SDSU, as it continues to excel athletically within the Summit League, solidifying its position as a powerhouse in collegiate sports.
